Calm, Cool & Collected

Diemen's historical significance predates that of Amsterdam, yet its development trajectory differs vastly from the Dutch metropolis. Currently, two scenarios loom for the small town: assimilation or autonomy, free from external influence. Considering modern imperatives demanding housing, expanded public spaces, and enhanced quality of life, how can Diemen evolve while preserving its serene identity?

In this project, I propose a transformation of Diemen into a welcoming city for new residents, while retaining its intimate charm and centuries-old character. The city centre maintains a human scale, cocooned by a gradual elevation of architectural typologies akin to a protective valley. To underscore Diemen's autonomy, I advocate for the intentional flooding of surrounding areas, delineating a tranquil enclave that remains serene, cool, and self-contained. This approach seeks to harmonize urban growth with Diemen's cherished identity, ensuring its evolution into a peaceful haven amidst the bustle of contemporary life.
